Plant trees safe distances from power lines and poles
Planting trees around your home can be a major investment in both time and money. Careful planning before planting will help ensure success and a good return on your landscape investment.
One of the common mistakes is planting a tall growing tree too close to a power line. Pruning a tree planted close to a power line becomes too difficult and dangerous as the tree matures and eventually its branches may cause power outage hazards, especially during storms.
In the worst case, electrical utility crews must drastically prune the tree to allow for the safe and reliable distribution of electricity.
We’d rather completely avoid this situation by asking homeowners to be aware of power lines when planting trees.
When planting landscaping near power lines, choose shrubs or small trees. Also choose deciduous tree which lose their leaves in the fall. These trees provide shade and block heat in the summer, but do not block sunlight from your home in the winter.
